As the spawner season winds down, I'd like to thank all the volunteers who participated in patrols and creek observations.
It seems like "challenging" is the word of the year, and yes, doing streamkeeper activities has certainly been challenging.
Thank you to our volunteers who participated in stream monitoring events such as aquatic invertebrate survyes (bug counts), juvenile fish trapping, etc.
Thank you, too, to the City of Burnaby and the Lower Mainland Green Team for organizing invasive plant species removal events with strict protocols in place.
We usually don't see spawners much past mid-December, but you never know, this year's run started late so perhaps it may extend longer.
There may still be a few fish around, we know we've seen live ones that we never found carcasses for due to the heavy rains and high flows.
The weather does not appear to be cooperating, with forecasts of 60% chance of showers to rain over the next week.
If anyone has a chance to pop out during a sunny/non-rainy break, that would be great. I think organizing group patrols this week or upcoming weekend is unlikely unless the weather changes.
It would be great to have some sort of year-end get-together. With Omicron on the rise, it would likely be best to do that outdoors.
If it looks like we may have a sunny Saturday or Sunday over the next few weeks, we can try for a munchies and hot beverages gathering at Ron McLean Park.
And thanks to the cranky Great Blue Heron we often encounter in the spawning habitat for keeping our hearts pounding as it sqwuaks while blasting into the sky : - )
